Queen Kong By Carol Ann Duffy Essay Example

Sovereign Kong By Carol Ann Duffy Essay Example Sovereign Kong By Carol Ann Duffy Paper Sovereign Kong By Carol Ann Duffy Paper Paper Topic: Song ann Duffy Poems Writing Sovereign Kong, according to the tremendous gorilla King Kong is a fairly unconventional character that considers herself an individual. In spite of the fact that she is a colossal, frightening creature, she shows love, friendship and enthusiasm for a male human. Her gave nature is a finished complexity to her appearance. Her disposition is verifiably inverse to King Kong, who acted forcefully and with abhor towards people. She considers herself very ordinary, and begins to look all starry eyed at a male human. The distinction in species doesn't change her warmth; in reality Im not certain she even takes note. She is so enveloped with commitment and love for this man, nothing else matters to her. The initial scarcely any verses of the sonnet persuade that Queen Kong isn't really a gorilla, yet a genuine individual. Remaining in 2 calm lodgings in the town, where individuals were utilized to outsiders and pretty much disregarded you. Clearly it would be unimaginable for a gorilla to serenely remain in a lodging suite, yet the way that Carol Ann Duffy depicts her character is that of a human. The principal notice of her cherished is in a predominant manner; nearly the methodology we are persuaded that men assume control over ladies, one of proprietorship and ownership, My little man. By utilizing such a little, smart sentence, Duffy underscores the high ground she has over her man, and with the reference to his size, she additionally underlines the way that she is such a great amount of bigger than him; he couldn't generally escape from her on the off chance that he wanted to. It was completely all consuming, instant adoration. Despite the fact that she initially depicts her character as controlling, those couple of words summarize exactly the amount she truly cares for him; she would do anything for him. Duffy utilizes short sentences and italic composition on suitable words when she needs to stress an inclination. Forlorn. She persuades that the man who came into her life was a friend in need as she had spent most of her life unfeeling and without anyone else. She additionally underscores stunning, demonstrating the sexual way she feels for him and the physical just as the enthusiastic fascination. Duffy makes numerous examples of sexual nature between the male and the gorilla inside the sonnet. I accept she does this to depict the way that appearance isn't huge, despite the fact that somebody may not be truly appealing to other people, if there is a passionate association between two individuals, they might need to be together explicitly albeit some may think that its off-base or shameless. There were things he could accomplish for me with the sweet artfulness of those hands that no gorilla could. In spite of the fact that she is talking from a sexual perspective, she doesn't make reference to whatever she accomplishes for him; this shows the predominance in their relationship and his need to satisfy her without receiving anything consequently. The verses are set out as though a story is being told, a blend of journal passages nearly, as Duffy composes it all in sequential request and with a ton of detail into every zone of the sonnet. Numerous incredible descriptive words are utilized all through the sonnet to depict her feelings, great and terrible; additionally to portray her adored; at the end of the day, flawlessness in her eyes. It isnt until the fourth verse that the man is referenced in a quicker manner, as though he loves Queen Kong and isn't being constrained into the relationship only by her size. Hed move into my open hand, plunk down; this portrays his eager methodology towards her; he adores her as well. Be that as it may, at that point he needs to go. This completely destroys her. Her predominance over him needs this verse, But I let him go, my man. Despite the fact that she despite everything alludes to him as her man, she is releasing him; she is attempting to do best by him, just in light of the fact that she reveres him to such an extent. The enthusiastic cost of her man leaving her is unmistakably spoken to in refrain 8. I dozed for seven days; at that point woke to gorge for a fortnight. I didnt wash. This kind of employments an American method of depicting Queen Kong; when men believe that ladies rest and gorge frozen yogurt to cause themselves to feel better, which is again joining her character to that of a human. Likewise, I drained when a fat red moon moved on the wilderness rooftop offers reference to the female menstrual cycle, which gorillas don't understanding. Menstrual cycles come once per month; she additionally makes reference to toward the start of verse 8 that she just kept going a month which co-inner parts with the cycle. She at that point chooses to get him back. This shows the friendly side of her character and that she can't live without the one she cherishes; she attempted however without much of any result. This additionally shows the edginess in her character, no other human would need to invest energy with a gorilla so she is in solitude; adequately she needs her man. Numerous occurrences of symbolism are utilized inside the ninth verse, for example, when Duffy composes solid downpour timberland of light utilizing an analogy to depict the New York horizon. She additionally utilizes similar sounding word usage; squeezing my energetic eye which underlines how upset she was while glancing through the windows of houses scanning for her darling. I discovered him, obviously. She could never surrender. Living all alone for only a month carried her to the acknowledgment that she required organization and couldnt make due without anyone else. She utilizes modifiers, for example, exquisite to depict her man when she discovers him, depicting her delight to be brought together with the one she cherishes by and by. At that point she trades characters, and abandons a gorilla once again into a human depicting herself shopping in Bloomingdales! This would be morally incomprehensible, yet the manner in which she outlines her life currently is as though its typical again in light of the fact that she has her man back with her. She portrays the following twelve cheerful long periods of their coexistence in less detail than the remainder of the sonnet, demonstrating that they hung out that she didnt truly have the opportunity to expound on anything, their lives were content. Despite the fact that she realized that he would kick the bucket before her, nothing readied her for the steamed she got when he did. I wear him now, around my neck, great, saved, with emeralds for eyes. In an unusual manner, this is an extremely cherishing signal. Her man will be with her any place she goes, and travel through an incredible rest with her, which is actually what she needs. I think Queen Kong is exceptionally satisfied that she didn't release her man totally, she battled for him and in view of this they figured out how to spend the last twelve upbeat long periods of his coexistence. There is incongruity toward the finish of this sonnet; though the acclaimed King Kong passed on in his storyline, Queen Kong isn't confronting demise, however managing the results of losing a friend or family member which is completely extraordinary. This shows the women's activist perspective, the female being left to live while the man dies. Sovereign Kong is one of the main sonnets in the assortment The Worlds Wife that depicts men in a positive light. In spite of the fact that the human included couldn't set up a lot of opposition against the gorilla, it describes him as a caring character that was practically ready to go through his time on earth with her. This sonnet supports female strength while additionally, by normally utilizing the descriptor little to depict her man and his genital highlights you realize that this story is a finished balance to King Kong with the female controlling the relationship. It is extremely fascinating to see the job inversion, particularly when composed from a women's activist perspective.

Building Bridges A Journey Of Learning About The...

Building Bridges: A Journey of Learning about the Transgender Community We are conditioned to believe the United States is a country built on equality, a country where we all get an equal, unbiased chance at success and happiness. Unfortunately, this is simply not the case. Many groups in our country are oppressed and discriminated against, for the sole fact that they stray from the norm. One of these groups is people who are transgender, and they are the community I want to â€Å"build bridges† with. I chose this community because my exposure to them has been very low, thus my education is limited and my perspective is narrow. I have seen a decent amount of television shows that depict the lives of transgender people, so most of my information comes from the media, which can be immensely problematic. Through this project I would like to become more correctly informed about the transgender community and in the process abolish my own prejudices. More precisely, I would like to build bridges with this community because I feel like I may have some wrong perceptions about its members because of what our society and media portrays about people who are trans. Only recently has our culture become more accepting and open to the idea of people who don’t identify with the sex they were assigned at birth. Prior to this, transgender people were often portrayed as being crazy or mentally ill. Sexuality in the Victorian Era in Sarah Raul´s In the Next...

Women of today are not the women of yesterday. Women have undergone a theatrical transformation which makes them bold, independent, and free-spirited beings. A voice that was once suppressed no longer can be tamed; this is illustrated through the rise of both male and female playwrights who continue to reinvent the role of women as more than â€Å"man’s other†. In her book, â€Å"Modern Drama by Women, 1880s-1930s: An International Anthology,† author Katherine Kelly references a quote by scholar Carrie Chapman Catt, that beautifully frames the transformative state women have undergone. According to Chapman: â€Å"Women are organizing, speaking, working †¦ [and] it is now a crucial time, when our Western help may give impetus and permanence to the movement†¦show more content†¦Additionally, women were condemned from participating in sexual activities outside of the confinements of marriage. In the book, Sex Tips for Husbands and Wives from 1894, Vi ctorian author Ruth Smythers, outlines the guideline on how women should endure sex. For instance she notes: 1. THE wise bride will permit a maximum of two brief sexual experiences weekly — and as time goes by she should make every effort to reduce this frequency. Feigned illness, sleepiness and headaches are among her best friends in this matter.† 2. A WISE wife will make it her goal never to allow her husband to see her unclothed body, and never allow him to display his unclothed body to her. 3. WHEN he finds her, she should lie as still as possible. Bodily motion could be interpreted as sexual excitement by the optimistic husband. Sex, when it cannot be prevented, should be practiced only in total darkness. 4. IF he attempts to kiss her on the lips she should turn her head slightly so that the kiss falls harmlessly on her cheek instead. If he lifts her gown and attempts to kiss her any place else she should quickly pull the gown back in place, spring from the bed, and announce that nature calls her to the toilet (Smythers). Smythers’ book serves as a lens into the inner-workings of sexual life for a married Victorian women; moreover, it is evident that they were constricted from exploring their sexuality. Raul uses this ignorance as a pretense to the emergence of sexuality

What Is Nsa Device Free Essays

NETWORK ATTACHMENT STORAGE Renika L. Whaley NT1110 Mr Dameon Hagler What is a NAS device? A NAS is hard disk storage that is set up with its own network address rather than being attached to the department computer that is serving applications to a network’s workstation. What is the speed of the network adapter available on a NAS DEVICE? The speed is typically one gigabit Ethernet connection but this can be changed to multiple gigabit, 10 gigabit, fiber optic by adding a PCI-e network card(s). We will write a custom essay sample on What Is Nsa Device or any similar topic only for you Order Now Older parts can be used which may be limited to 10/100 megabit. If you need an exact answer for speed, simply look at the wiki on gigabit. What is the Capacity Range? The capacity range again varies; with port replication and add-on hard drive controller cards there is hardly a limit on size. A board with 6 SATA ports can be replicated (1 to 5 port) allowing for 30 drives to be attached. Is there any fault tolerance (such RAID) built into a NAS device? As fault tolerance, raid 50 is fairly stable if set up correctly, raid 10 has been touted as one of the best setups since more drives can fail at one time without data loss. All of those features can be used on typical NAS devices. Are management features available? Yes Speculate on why a user would want to use a NAS. For example, what would be the advantage of all family photos and videos being stored on a NAS in a family where the parents and children all had their own computers? NAS is network allocated storage apart from any other systems attached to the network. There are a lot of considerations: 1. Power usage. All users may shutdown their computers. Some people build NAS from atom boards and other things for their low power characteristics. ) 2. Always on availability. As long as the network is up and the NAS is functioning, it is always available regardless of what computers are on/off the network. 3. Centralized Storage for backup. If a computer needs to be rebuilt or wiped, you can push files and backups and restore from the same location. 4. Cost effective. Installing a RAID 1 in each computer (Mirror drive) would cost more and use more storag e than perhaps a RAID 5 in the NAS with multiple PC’s. This may apply more to offices than for example a small home with 2-3 PC’s. 5. Redundancy. Most personal computers operate a single drive (cost consideration) or on performance considerations (RAID 0 etc. ) more so than reliability. NAS are typically setup for redundancy in case of drive failure (RAID 1,5,6 and the various permutations. ) 6. Lower priority data. This doesn’t always apply, but lower priority data can be moved to another location (for example, VM Images). They take up storage space, but a user may not want this to take up higher priority space. How to cite What Is Nsa Device, Papers

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind Essays - Penology, Criminology

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind Out of sight, out of mind. California's ?Three Strikes? law is based loosely on that very philosophy. When someone is a repeat violator of the criminal justice system, the best solution is to just lock him or her away for a life term without the possibility of parole. We should disregard any of the positive accomplishments these individuals have possibly made to society, their families and their ability to change their lives. Possibly the next step is to simply execute these repeat offenders. Why continue to spend the tax money of hard working Americans to support these criminals? Unfortunately, attitudes like the one just conveyed are too common and are fueling the fire of the ?Three Strikes? law. Out of sight, out of mind has never been a sound solution to any problem, and the ?Three Strikes? law is not a solution. The idea of locking up a repeat offender of the criminal justice system for life is incredibly too convenient. As human beings, most of us will respond to nurture and education. When dealing with criminals, this becomes known as rehabilitation. Rehabilitation is not something that always comes on the first try. In a very broad sense, it is like learning how to ride a bicycle. You try, and try again until you eventually are riding smoothly and freely down the street. Of course, you fall off. You might even fall twice, or three times, but eventually you do get it. Alcoholics do not always get sober the first time they attend Alcoholics Anonymous. Very often, it takes several attempts; this means several relapses into their dependency on alcohol. Once they are sober, they need to continue their rehabilitation for life. They need to continue with their weekly meetings and with the interaction of other rehabilitated alcoholics. These are the principals that need to be applied to criminals . The argument could be made that some crimes do not merit a second chance at freedom or even rehabilitation. This is true. Murderers, rapists, pedophiles and other violent offenders are an exclusive group of criminals who should serve a severe prison sentence. Repeat offenders of these crimes should absolutely be locked away for life. The ?Three Strikes? law does not consider this. The circumstances of these offenses are never taken into consideration. Michael Riggs stole twenty dollars worth of vitamins and received a sentence of twenty-five years to life. He also had a criminal record and it was his past offenses not his current one that got him the lengthy sentence. Non-violent offenders need rehabilitation, not permanent captivity. The underlying idea here is that these criminals need help and rehabilitation at the very first offense. There is no denying that a criminal owes a debt to society and that jail time should be served. Programs need to be set up to rehabilitate criminals the first time they stray from justice. Prison to work programs will also create opportunities for these criminals to be able to find work after prison and have a purpose. A human being can not be put out of sight or out of mind, because we as Americans are not blind nor are we unforgiving.

What is the cough physiological reaction? Describe the procedure that Cari’s respiratory system is utilizing to unclutter her lungs by coughing. The cough physiological reaction is used to clear phlegm and thorns that are in the nasal transitions and throat. There are cilia in her windpipe that is traveling mucus up from the lungs. When the mucous secretion becomes or abundant it triggers the cough physiological reaction. Which structures found in the terminal bronchioles and air sacs usually would protect Cari’s lungs from infective pathogens and particulate affair? Macrophages found in the terminal bronchioles and air sacs that usually would protect Cari’s lungs from infective pathogens and particulate affa ir. How would the opposition of Cari’s air passages be affected by extra mucous secretion and fluid in her lung? Excess mucous secretion and fluid in the lungs would raise the opposition of Cari’s air passages because of the little diameter the buildup would do. The fluid would hold some of air sacs under H2O where they could non work decently and at that place would besides be more clash from the buildup. How would Cari’s lung conformity ( the attempt required to spread out the lungs ) be altered as her air sac fill with fluid due to pneumonia? Lung conformity would increase from seeking to coerce gases into and out of the air sac. Those are filled with fluid due to the pneumonia. How would fluid in Cari’s lung affect her entire lung capacity? Fluid in Cari’s lungs would take down her entire lung capacity by non leting the infinite that is taken up by the fluid to be filled with air. How does the lift of Cari’s respiratory rate alter her minute airing? Elevation in her respiratory rate would change her minute airing by raising it. Minute airing is determined by times ing respiratory rate by entire volume. Tyndall Effect Definition and Examples

Tyndall Effect Definition and Examples The Tyndall effect is the scattering of light as a light beam passes through a colloid. The individual suspension particles scatter and reflect light, making the beam visible. The amount of scattering depends on the frequency of the light and density of the particles. As with Rayleigh scattering, blue light is scattered more strongly than red light by the Tyndall effect. Another way to look at it is that longer wavelength light is transmitted, while shorter wavelength light is reflected by scattering. The size of the particles is what distinguishes a colloid from a true solution. For a mixture to be a colloid, the particles must be in the range of 1-1000 nanometers in diameter. The Tyndall effect was first described by 19th-century physicist John Tyndall. Tyndall Effect Examples Shining a flashlight beam into a glass of milk is an excellent demonstration of the Tyndall effect. You might want to use skim milk or else dilute the milk with a bit of water so you can see the effect of the colloid particles on the light beam.An example of how the Tyndall effect scatters blue light may be seen in the blue color of smoke from motorcycles or two-stroke engines. The visible beam of headlights in fog is caused by the Tyndall effect. The water droplets scatter the light, making the headlight beams visible. The Tyndall effect is used in commercial and lab settings to determine the particle size of aerosols.Opalescent glass displays the Tyndall effect. The glass appears blue, yet the light that shines through it appears orange.Blue eye color is from Tyndall scattering through the translucent layer over the eyes iris. The blue color of the sky results from light scattering, but this is called Rayleigh scattering and not the Tyndall effect because the particles involved are molecules in the air. They are smaller than particles in a colloid. Similarly, light scattering from dust particles is not due to the Tyndall effect because the particle sizes are too large. Try It Yourself Suspending flour or corn starch in water is an easy demonstration of the Tyndall effect. Normally, flour is off-white (slightly yellow). The liquid appears slightly blue because the particles scatter blue light more than red. References Human color vision and the unsaturated blue color of the daytime sky, Glenn S. OSHA Case Summary Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

OSHA Case Summary - Assignment Example Setting standards refers to an act of establishing one or more clear-cut score(s) on a test. The standards constitute informed ideas that are distinct and significant in their applications. An act of setting would include approving, rejecting, adjusting or implementing an action plan. Enforcing standards would mean executing the strategies as laid by the body concerned. Despite the fact that standard setting a purely procedural course, it ideally comprises strategy fabricators, test developers, and capacity experts early ensuring that the test outcomes is convenient and defensible. A proper guideline would suppress any form of unethical or rather unsafe behavior in an organization (Bejar, 2008). A well-structured institution has no room for tolerance of any weird characters within its premises. Training involves a practical application of procedures and theories. In any organization, a leader has a mandate of providing his/her employees with skills that suit their areas of duties. Workers need applied knowledge concerning their fields of actions to avoid committing faults because of insufficient drilling. Training may take a form of seminars and conferences. Trained worker understands all details relating to their working environments. Practical should emphasize safety techniques within and outside the working communities. Whenever an employee undertakes a proper course in his field of services, the chances of falling to injuries become slim. Every human being would need help in one way or the other from another. Employees should learn to appreciate and work as a team with a specific objective of achieving organization’s goals. Once a person inculcates a habit of consultation in areas of difficulties, then ignorance related injuries and unethical actions would reduce drastically. A culture of security comprises of a shared behaviors,

Foundations for Change and Linear Regression Scatterplot Assignment

Foundations for Change and Linear Regression Scatterplot - Assignment Example When this is the case there seems to be urgency for change in the management and the employees. This can be established by considering what else is happening within the company (Johnson and William, 2001). Managerial leaders must look at the broad organization beyond ones division or division to establish whether it is the right time for change. When everyone understands the need for change and the benefits that the company and individual employees will get if the change is successfully implemented then the organization is ready for change. Most of the times the management will be quick to explain how the organization will benefit without explaining how the individual employee will benefit and this causes lack of readiness from their end (Banutu-Gomez and Banutu-Gomez, 2007). Change is also possible provided that there is readiness from both employees and the top level management. This is possible by explaining the need for change to both and reaching out to them for their input. Get to know what is working from their end, what is not working and what can change. Basically, the organization will only be ready if both the employees and the management are ready to be actively engaged in the process. The determination and availing of all that is required in the successful implementation of change is crucial. Will there be need of new technology? Do employees need training on a new process? Is there need to slow down the process of implementing change to allow employees to ‘catch up’? Before an organization begins the process if making changes in its operations, it must undertake the following important steps. The top management in every organization must seek the support of their stakeholders if they want to initiate a change within the organization. This is mainly due to the fact that the stakeholders have a lot of day on the resources and management of the organization hence they must approve of any change

Dress Code :: essays research papers

Dress code has been the biggest topic between the Board officials and parents. There have been many decisions and arguments that were worked out by administration and local school, often at the request of parents. There should be a dress code for students for several reasons.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Many public schools today are making dangerous decisions and these decisions may end up saving someone's life. The decisions are about school uniforms and dress codes. Public schools are beginning to open their eyes to the real world and see what their students are wearing and what the clothes are about. Some schools have banned any clothes with inappropriate symbols or sayings. Baggy wear is very dangerous. Schools are now even taking away the privilege of those clothes for the reason that weapons and other dangerous, illegal items may be smuggled in under loose pants, hats, shirts and jackets.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The cost of maintaining a stylish wardrobe can be expensive. Many families have more important things to spend their money on than the image of school children. The dress code may be a way to keep the costs of school down for those families. In some schools, there has even been fighting or stealing based on expensive sneakers or jewelry. There are many clothes in fashion for boys and girls which are not appropriate for school dress. Good taste and common sense should dictate parental and student choice of school clothes. The school will determine what is not appropriate dress, even if it conforms to current fashion. Also, school dress should not be viewed as a daily fashion show.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In this essay I had many compelling reason why there should be dress codes for students. I think that schools should have dress codes because it they can help people

15 Quotes That Will Help You Identify Flattery and Praise

Praise has a therapeutic effect on the receiver. It helps to restore a persons self-esteem. It gives hope. Praise is not flattery. There is a distinct difference between the two. Learn to Differentiate Between Praise and Flattery There is a popular Aesops tale about the foolish crow and the wily fox. A hungry crow finds a piece of cheese and sits on a branch of a tree to enjoy his meal. A fox who was equally hungry sees the crow with the piece of cheese. Since he badly wants the food, he decides to trick the crow with flattering words. He lavishes praise on the crow by calling him a beautiful bird. He says that he would like to hear the crows sweet voice, and asks the crow to sing. The foolish crow believes that the praise is genuine, and opens his mouth to sing. Only to realize that he had been fooled by the wily fox when the cheese was hungrily devoured by the fox. The difference lies in the intent of the words. You can praise someone for their actions, or the lack of it, while flattery can be vague, undefined, and even false. Here are some ways to spot the difference between praise and flattery. Praise Is Specific to an Action; Flattery Is Adulation Without a Cause Praise is an actionable device to encourage a positive outcome. For instance, a teacher could praise her student by saying, John, your handwriting has improved since last week. Good job! Now, such words of praise can help John to improve his handwriting further. He knows what his teacher likes, and he can work on his handwriting to produce better results. However, if the teacher says, John, youre good in class. I think youre the best! these words are unspecific, vague, and offer no direction for improvement to the receiver. John will, of course, feel good about the kind words from his teacher, but he wouldnt know how to be better in his class. Praise Intends to Encourage; Flattery Intends to Deceive Flattery is buttering up. With flattering words, someone hopes to get their job done without any concern for the person who receives the flattery. Flattery is based on an ulterior motive, that only benefits the flatterer. On the other hand, praise benefits the receiver, by encouraging the receiver to see the positive side of life. Praise helps others to recognize their talents, raise their self-esteem, restore hope, and give direction. Praise helps both the giver and the receiver.   Those Who Praise Are Immensely Self-Confident; Those Who Flatter Don't Have Confidence Since flattery is manipulative, flatterers are usually spineless, weak, and of poor character. They feed on others ego and hope to get scraps of goodies from egocentric megalomaniacs. Those who flatter dont have leadership qualities. They lack the personality to inspire and instill confidence. On the other hand, praise givers are usually self-confident and assume leadership positions. They are able to infuse positive energy in their team, and they know how to channel the energy of each member of the team through praise and encouragement. By giving praise, they can not just help others grow, but they also enjoy self-growth. Praise and appreciation go hand in hand. And so does flattery and adulation. Praise Fosters Trust; Flattery Fosters Mistrust Would you trust a person who tells you how wonderful you are, how kind you are, or how great you are? Or would you trust a person who tells you that you are a good co-worker, but you need to improve your social skills? It is tough to spot flattery if the flatterer is cunning enough to veil his words to sound like appreciation. A devious person could make flattery look like genuine praise. In the words of  Walter Raleigh:   But it is hard to know them from friends, they are so obsequious and full of protestations; for a wolf resembles a dog, so doth a flatterer a friend. You have to be careful when you receive compliments that amount to nothing. Flattery according to the Bible, is a form of hatred. Flattery can be used to manipulate, cheat, deceive, and hurt others. Beware of Flattery Because Flatterers Can Hurt You Words that are sweetened with honeyed words can fool the gullible. Dont let others sway you by their sweet words that mean nothing. If you meet someone who praises you without reason or charms you with honeyed words of appreciation, it is time to cock your ears and listen beyond the words. Ask yourself:   Is he or she trying to woo me? What are his/her intentions?  Are these words true or false? Can there be an ulterior motive behind these flattering words? Accept Praise With a Pinch of Salt Let praise or flattery not go into your head. While it is good to hear praise, accept it with a pinch of salt. Perhaps, the person who praised you is usually generous. Or perhaps, the person praising you wants something out of you. Flattery can be exhausting, even if they are generous. It is like eating too much sweet and feeling sick after a while. Praise, on the other hand, is measured, specific, and direct. Know Who Your Real Friends and Well Wishers Are Sometimes, those who criticize you more often than praise you have the best interest in their heart. They may be stingy when it comes to praise, but their words of appreciation are more genuine than compliments you gather from a stranger. Learn to spot your true friends, from those who are friends in good times. Shower praises and compliments wherever necessary, but not because you want to gain a fat favor. Be genuine and specific while praising someone, if you want to be accepted as a well-wisher. If someone flatters you, and you are unable to tell whether it is flattery or praise, double-check with a true friend, who can help you see the difference. A good friend will puncture your inflated ego, and bring you back to ground reality if the need arises. Here are 15 quotes that talk about praise and flattery. The whole creation responds to praise and is glad.

In the reflection subdivision, thoughts and suggestions from equal reappraisal forms the nucleus treatment. Literature reappraisal What is Menopause? The climacteric is defined as the surcease of the catamenial rhythm and is caused by ovarian failure. The term is derived from the Greek meno, intending month, and intermission, intending an stoping. ( Rees et al 2009 ) . The perimenopause includes the period get downing with the first characteristics of nearing climacteric and ends 1 twelvemonth after the last catamenial period. Menopausal passage is period of clip of the perimenopause that ends with the concluding catamenial period ( Burger et al, 2002 ) . What happens ( biological science of climacteric ) ? The biological science underlying the passage to menopause includes cardinal neuroendocrine alterations every bit good as alterations within the ovary, the most contact of which is a profound diminution in follicle Numberss ( Burger et al, 2002 ) . The entire Numberss of oocyte are maximum at intrauterine life. The entire figure of germ cells appears to lift steadily, around 600,000 at 2 months which making a extremum of 6,800,000 at 5 month. By the clip of birth, the figure of oocyte will worsen. In newborn babies around 100,000 oocytes remains and at the age of 7 old ages merely 300,000 oocytes survives ( Baker, 1963 ) . The figure of follicles lessenings with increased age, alteration occurs when figure of follicle falls to the critical figure of 25,000 at age 37.5 old ages. The figure of follicle reduced to around 1000 at 51 old ages and it was adopted as the menopausal threshold because it corresponds to the average age of climacteric in the general population ( Faddy et al, 199 2 ) . In one survey it was demonstrated that figure of follicle was 10-fold higher in normal flowing adult females than that in perimenopausal adult females. Follicles were virtually absent in the postmenopausal ovaries ( Richardson et al, 1987 ) . Menopause is triggered by the figure of ovarian follicles falling below a threshold figure and is irreversible because oogonial root cells disappear after birth ( Faddy et al, 1992 ) . When it happens? In one survey it is demonstrated that the mean age at natural climacteric was 51.4 old ages. If the climacteric occurs in a adult female who is less than 45 old ages of age, it is known as premature climacteric ( have to happen out ) . Smoke, lower educational attainment and nonemployment were related to earlier age at natural climacteric and anterior usage of unwritten preventives and para were associated with ulterior age at climacteric ( Gold, et Al, 2001 ) . What are the common symptoms of climacteric? In climacteric, there is decrease in production of oestrogen and addition in degree of gonadotrophin. Follicular exciting endocrine gets addition in circulation and lessening in degree of oestradiol and inhibin B ( Burger et al, 2002 ) . Therefore during the climacteric diminution in the degree of oestrogen, can do a figure of symptoms. The major menopausal symptoms are hot flowers, dark workout suits and urogenital symptoms, including vaginal waterlessness, loss of lubrication with sexual intercourse, and urinary frequence ( Farrell 2003 ) . Some symptoms are discussed in item below ; Vasomotor symptoms Hot flowers and dark workout suits are the primary and most common symptoms of climacteric. Hot flowers have great variableness in their frequence and badness in adult females ; they may prevail for several months or last for 10 old ages ( Utian, WH, 2005 ) . Hot flowers are episodes of inappropriate heat loss mediated by cutaneal vasodilatation over the upper bole ( Rees et al, 2009 ) . Vasomotor symptoms are extremely prevailing in most societies. The prevalence of these symptoms varies widely and may be influenced by a scope of factors, including clime, diet, lifestyle, adult females ‘s functions, and attitudes sing the terminal of generative life and aging. Forms in hot flush prevalence were evident for menopausal phases and, to a lesser grade, for regional fluctuation ( Freeman et al, 2007 ) . Urogenital wasting and urinary incontinency Atrophic alterations occur in the vulva, vagina, urethra and vesica subsequent to oestrogen want ( Iosif, 1992 ) . This changes leads to cut down sexual activity. The oestrogen receptors decline in the vaginal mucous membrane after the climacteric, Cavallini survey shows ER as dominant oestrogen receptor in the human vagina and no significant difference has been seen in its look between pre-menopausal and post-menopausal groups. While a diminution of the ER? messenger RNA degree has been found in the post-menopausal adult females merely. Therefore, Oestrogen receptors ne’er disappear wholly and, in response to exogenic oestrogens, the figure of receptors in the vagina can return to pre-menopausal degrees ( Cavallini et al, 2008 ) . Therefore, this activation of oestrogen receptors produces an addition in vaginal secernments and epithelial proliferation and vascularization taking to glycogen deposition and a decrease in vaginal pH due to higher lactic acid production ( Galhardo et al, 2006 ) . Some symptoms of urogenital wasting are listed in Table 1. Table 1. Symptoms of Urogenital Atrophy Vaginal Urinary Dryness Frequency Rubing Nocturia Burning/Soreness Urgency Discharge Dysurias Dyspareunia Recurrent urinary piece of land infectionsPsychological Symptom Depressed temper, anxiousness, crossness, temper swings are symptoms associated with climacteric ( Freeman et al, 2008 ) . There is grounds of increased hazard for developing depression. Depression during the perimenopause may hold a significant impact on personal, household and professional domains of life ( Cohen et al, 2005 ) . Womans are at a higher hazard than work forces to develop depression. Menopausal passage is associated with higher hazard for new oncoming and perennial depression. Ovarian endocrines modulate 5-hydroxytryptamine and noradrenaline neurotransmission, a procedure that may be associated with implicit in pathophysiological procedures involved in the outgrowth of depressive symptoms during periods of hormonal fluctuation in biologically predisposed subpopulations ( Frey et al, 2008 ) . In one survey following psychological symptoms were included ; ( Greene, 2008 ) . The psychological symptoms are listed in Table 2. Psychological Symptoms Anxiety Depression Feeling tense or nervous Feeling unhappy or down Attack of terror Loss of involvement in things Heart crushing rapidly or strongly Irritability Excitable Shouting enchantments Trouble in take a breathing Feeling tired or missing in energy Trouble in concentrating Osteoporosis Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass, micro architectural impairment of bone tissue taking to heighten bone breakability and a attendant addition in break hazard ( Consensus Development Conference, 1991 ) . The authoritative osteoporotic breaks are hep, vertebral and wrist breaks. These osteoporotic breaks such as hip breaks have a really high morbidity and mortality. The life-time hazard of any osteoporotic break is really high and lies within the scope of 40-50 % in adult females and 13-22 % for work forces. Fractures happening at a site associated with low BMD and which addition in incidence after the age of 50 old ages ( Johnell and Kanis, 2005 ) . Dementia and Cognitive map Harmonizing to one survey grounds suggests that oestrogen failure associated with climacteric and station climacteric, which is related to cognitive and affectional upsets and to increased hazard of Alzheimer ‘s disease ( Solerte et al, 1999 ) . A gradual diminution in cognitive maps is portion of the normal aging procedure. However, pronounced confusion, freak out, memory loss and other alterations may signal a underdeveloped dementedness. A broad assortment of upsets can do dementedness like Alzheimer disease, vascular dementedness and dementedness with Lewy organic structures ( Rees et al, 2009 ) . Alzheimer disease is the most common type of dementedness and is characterized by memory loss, confusion and cognitive shortages ( ) . Oestrogen influences memory, knowledge and attenuates the extent of cell decease ensuing from encephalon hurts ( Wise et al, 2001 ) . Several surveies suggested that oestrogen is indispensable for optimum encephalon maps as oestrogen has been shown to increase intellectual blood flow, act as an anti-inflammatory agent, and enhance activity at neural synapses ( Behl, 2002 ) . Which are the interventions for menopausal symptoms? Merely one in 10 adult females seeks medical advice when they go through the climacteric, and many do non necessitate any intervention. However, if your menopausal symptoms are terrible plenty to interfere with your day-to-day life, there are interventions that can assist. Treatment for vasomotor symptoms Hormone replacing therapy is extremely effectual in relieving hot flowers and dark workout suits. In one systematic reappraisal 21 surveies, continuance from 3 month to 3 old ages were included with 2511 participants. There was a important decrease of strength and frequence of hot flowers in the HRT group compared to placebo group was observed ( Maclennan et al, 2001 ) . Patches, gels and implants have been found to cut down hot flowers with the same grade of efficaciousness as unwritten therapy ( Farrell 2003 ) . One randomised test demonstrates that black baneberry used in isolation or in a multibotanical merchandise helps in alleviation of vasomotor symptoms ( Newton et al, 2006 ) . In one dual blind, randomised, parallel group, outpatient, multicenter survey entire 177 postmenopausal adult females were sing five or more hot flowers per twenty-four hours were randomized to have either soy isoflavone infusion or placebo. Decreases in the incidence and badness of hot flowers occurred every bit shortly as 2 hebdomads in the soy group, whereas the placebo group experienced no alleviation for the first 4 hebdomads. Soy isoflavone infusion has effectual in cut downing frequence and badness of flowers and supply an attractive add-on to the picks available for alleviation of hot flowers. ( Upmalis et al, 2000 ) . Treatment for Urogenital wasting and urinary incontinency Oestrogen therapy is first pick of intervention for urogenital wasting ( Palacios, 2009 ) . A meta-analysis of surveies of oestrogen therapy demonstrated that, oestrogen is efficacious in the intervention of urogenital wasting. Low-dose vaginal oestradiol readyings are every bit effectual as systemic oestrogen therapy in the intervention of urogenital wasting in postmenopausal adult females ( Cardozo et al, 1998 ) . Oestrogen pick 1 or 2 times/week may forestall return after symptoms are resolved ( Laurie, 2001 ) . In one reappraisal it was concluded, that oestrogen given consistently or locally in all dose regimen is effectual, but topical vaginal application entirely is preferable if systematic intervention is non needed ( Palacios, 2009 ) . Cochrane systematic reappraisal besides concluded that vaginal oestrogen reduces the figure of urinary piece of land infections in postmenopausal adult females ‘s, with perennial urinary piece of land infection ( Perrotta et al, 2008 ) . Vaginal lubricators and moisturizers are besides helpful ; it provides longer alleviation by altering the unstable content of endometrium and take downing vaginal pH. Womans with contraindications to ERT-HRT could utilize lubricators for intercourse-related waterlessness or moisturizers for more uninterrupted alleviation ( Laurie, 2001 ) . Lubricants are impermanent steps to alleviate vaginal waterlessness during intercourse and moisturizers give longer diagnostic alleviation ( Palacios, 2009 ) . Agrimony, black baneberry, chaste tree, dong quai, enchantress Pomaderris apetala, and phytoestrogens are utile to cut down the vaginal waterlessness and dyspareunia but no grounds exists to back up these specific claims ( Laurie, 2001 ) . Treatment for psychological symptom Transdermal oestradiol, serotonergic and noradrenergic antidepressants are efficacious in the intervention of depression in diagnostic midlife adult females ( Frey et al, 2008 ) . There is deficient grounds that HT improves temper, depression and other temper symptoms ( Farrell 2003 ) . Socioculture and household factors are more of import in the aetiology of mental unwellness in menopausal adult females ; in such instances antidepressants are more effectual than oestrogen therapy ( Ballinger, 1990 ) . Treatment for osteoporosis Oestrogen therapy is the drug of pick for forestalling bone loss in menopausal adult females. Women ‘s Health Initiative ( WHI ) survey reported important decrease in the hazard of clinical breaks in a population-based sample of healthy postmenopausal adult females aged 50-79 old ages. In this big randomized controlled test, 16 608 adult females were recruited to the oestrogen-plus-progestogen arm of the survey. Treatment consisted, of one day-to-day tablet incorporating conjugated equine estrogen ( CEE ) , 0.625 milligram, and Provera ethanoate ( MPA ) , 2.5 mg. Trial were stopped with average follow-up period of 5.2 twelvemonth. In this survey, a important decrease was demonstrated in clinical vertebral and non-vertebral breaks, including hip breaks ( WHI, 2002 ) . Calcitonin besides helps by diminishing farther bone loss at vertebral and femoral sites. Orally administered bisphosphonates cut down bone loss and the incidence of vertebral malformation in patients with establis hed postmenopausal osteoporosis. In menopausal adult females adequate Ca consumption is necessary. A minimal consumption of 800 milligram of calcium day-to-day is recommended for all grownups. Fluoride, anabolic steroids and parathyroid endocrine stimulate bone formation. Vitamin D lack increases the hazard of hep break ; hence vitamin D lack should be prevented and treated ( Consensus Development Conference, 1991 ) . Treatment for Dementia and Cognitive map One survey demonstrates that oestrogen plus progestin therapy increased the hazard for likely dementedness in postmenopausal adult females aged 65 old ages or older and did non forestall mild cognitive damage in these adult females ( Shumaker et al, 2003 ) . There are no dependable informations to demo the benefit of oestrogen replacing therapy on dementedness with regard to knowledge, bar or hold in development of Alzheimer dementedness ( Mulnard et al, 2000 ) . Womans are more likely to be dietetic addendum and natural redress, phytoestrogens ; peculiarly isoflavones have protective effects in these conditions. Hormone Replacement Therapy ( HRT ) Hormone replacing therapy ( HRT ) is effectual in handling several of the most common menopausal symptoms, including hot flowers and dark workout suits, vaginal symptoms and cystitis. The chief indicant for HRT usage in postmenopausal adult females remains the alleviation of menopausal symptoms. Treatment for up to 5 old ages does non add important life clip hazard but little addition in hazard of chest malignant neoplastic disease after long-run therapy ( Skouby et al, 2005 ) . Hormone replacing therapy consists of an oestrogen with progestin. Oestrogen therapy on day-to-day footing with a progestin either cyclically or continuously are being used in non-hysterectomized adult females. After hysterectomy it is usual to order oestrogen entirely ( Farrell, 2003 ) . Testosterone therapy is given to immature adult females traveling through a premature climacteric and to adult females who exhibit symptoms of testosterone lack ( Farrell 2003 ) . Tibolone is a steroid compound structurally related to 19-nortestosterone derived functions ( such as norethisterone ) , which exhibits a attendant weak estrogenic, progestational, and androgenic activity. Tibolone is described as a tissue-specific therapy because of its mechanisms of action, a classical receptor response, enzyme suppression within the chest and womb and specific local metamorphosis as in the womb. It is metabolized to three metabolites, with the 3?- and 3?- hydroxytibolone metabolites working merely by adhering to the oestrogen receptor and hence holding oestrogen-like actions, and the ?4 isomer holding Lipo-Lutin and androgen-like actions but no oestrogen action ( Palacios, 2001 ) . The paths of disposal of endocrines ( for HRT ) that are available are unwritten, Transdermal, hypodermic, vaginal, intramuscular, intrauterine, buccal and intranasal. There are besides many different types of oestrogen, including oestradiol, theelin, oestriol and conjugated equid oestrogen readyings, and progestin such as micronized Lipo-Lutin, dydrogestrone, norethisterone, Provera ethanoate, levonorgestrel and other newer progestogens ( Farrell 2003 ) . The hazard and benefits of HRTs are listed in Table 3. Auctions and Online Procurement Bell 905E04 2005 6p 805E04 II. Rationale for selecting and sequencing the items in this module In Section 1 the Principles of Pricing note, based on the earlier Pricing: A Value-Based Approach (500071), conceptualizes pricing in terms of objective value, perceived value, and costs. It addresses in detail how to determine objective and perceived value, along with price sensitivity and price customization, before bringing the analysis back into the context of the other 3 P’s and the wider marketing strategy. In the Colonial Homes case, the company in question is presented with an unexpected increase in the cost of raw materials, and must decide how adjusting its price to cover at least some of the increase will affect customer demand and profits, or whether it would be less unprofitable to change suppliers. For students who are not yet familiar with the necessary mathematics, the suggested supplement Market Analysis Toolkit: Pricing and Profitability Analysis discusses how to draw a demand curve and calculate costs, optimal prices, and profit. In Section 2, Note on Behavioral Pricing extends some remarks at the end of Principles of Pricing concerning ethical and legal factors in pricing. It argues that businesses downplay considerations of fairness when pricing, and pay dearly for it. One cannot determine customer willingness to pay without attending to behavioral and psychological factors that seem to fall outside of a purely economic calculus. The Tweeter etc. and alternative Coca-Colas New Vending Machine cases exhibit the influence of behavioral factors in pricing and mispricing. The cases in Section 3 illustrate value-based pricing. In Atlantic Computer: A Bundle of Pricing Options, a high-end server manufacturer has developed a new server for the basic server market and a software tool that greatly improves its performance for particular applications. Students are asked to compare the prices derived from cost-plus, competitor-based, and status-quo pricing with that derived from the valuebased pricing model described in the Principles of Pricing note. The case closes by looking at the challenges of implementing value-based pricing, and more specifically, whether 1) the sales staff will be able to persuade customers to buy at the higher value-based price and 2) how the competition might react and respond. In the alternative case, Curled Metal Inc. —Engineered Product Division, a firm has invented a new product (curled metal pile driver pads). Production costs of each pad are higher than the current pad cost, but they last much longer and perform much better. How much of that improvement can Curled Metal capture for itself in pricing, and how can it use its choice of distribution channel and sales strategy to push the customers’ perceived price towards the objective price? For the two cases in Section 4, Virgin Mobile USA: Pricing for the Very First Time and XM Satellite Radio, pricing structure is as crucial as price itself. Virgin is entering a very crowded mobile telephone pace and has decided to target an underserved market, the young, many of whom have poor credit and uneven usage patterns. Before it can determine the optimal price, it must choose its pricing structure: buffet versus a la carte, prepaid versus postpaid, and whether it will employ the hidden fees and subsidies prevalent in the industry. Pricing structure, it recognizes, is harder to change than the price level, and it will be key to hitting its target market. With its rich market data, students are also asked to make break-even analyses, estimates of customer acquisition cost, and estimates of customer lifetime value. XM, too, is considering a novel pricing structure, passing on advertising revenues and relying solely on subscription fees. As with the Virgin case, price level presumes pricing structure, and pricing structure follows targeting and segmentation, all informed with market research data. However, the XM case includes other complications, for it will need to establish partnerships with leading electronics manufacturers to provide radio receivers, and thus must consider trading off part of the subscription income to subsidize the manufacturers and lower the entry price for potential customers. There is also a discussion of some dynamic pricing possibilities. Dynamic pricing is the focus of Section 5. American Airlines, Inc. : Revenue Management, an HBS classic, gives a simple but rigorous introduction to dynamic pricing and revenue management, as it was practiced by the airline industry in 1990, subsequent to the deregulation of 1978. Revenue management is composed of pricing and yield management, and students learn through quantitative assignments that the two must be done in tandem to maximize revenue. The alternative case, Priceline. com: Name Your Own Price, extends airline revenue management into the online era. Priceline builds an internet-pricing front for the airlines that allows them to shield their brands in a reverse-auction market-making mechanism. Its success encourages it to try to extend its innovation horizontally to other industries, none of which shares all of the characteristics that make its economic logic so applicable to airline travel. The case provides students the opportunity to think through how online markets, and, especially, the â€Å"name your own price† model, have different degrees of traction with different types of products, markets, and consumers, and what changes in pricing structure are necessary to make them work. The supplemental readings in Section 5 provide additional context for the cases. The article â€Å"How to Reap Prices with Dynamic Pricing† points out that, historically-speaking, fixed prices are an anomaly, and that with changes in technology and cultural attitudes, businesses can increase revenues and profits with dynamic pricing. It identifies the salient characteristics that make dynamic pricing possible and profitable. Furthermore, the note Pricing and Market Making on the Internet shows how the three different kinds of market-making mechanisms—set price, buyer/seller negotiation, and horizontal interaction—apply to the Internet, and when adopting a particular market mechanism can work to counteract the downward pressure on prices and margins often associated with e-commerce. The final case, Mars Inc. : Online Procurement, is an introduction to B2B auctions in Section 6. It asks students to construct a model that Mars might use to operate its online procurement auction, given its specific requirements, and to use Excel Solver to determine the winning bid. The HBSP simulation, Pricing Simulation: Universal Rental Car (#2093) is highly recommended as an integrative exercise, either to introduce or to cap off this module. Students are asked to manage a rental car operation and improve regional performance by developing a pricing strategy. The simulation covers many of the same principles of pricing covered in the notes and in the cases in this module: price elasticity, differences in demand across customer segments, competitive and macroeconomic factors, and pricing mathematics.

Kate Chopin and The Story of an Hour Research Paper Example

Kate Chopin and The Story of an Hour Paper Literary elements support and develop the themes in all works of fine literature. The short story â€Å"The Story of an Hour† by Kate Chopin is a work delicately woven together with different literary elements including symbolism, character, and point of view that contribute to the theme of the story, which is a study of individuality conflicting with oppression. Oppression in general can come from society, human beings, or even from the same person. In this short story, Louise is being oppressed by all three groups aforementioned. She is oppressed by society in having to conform to a certain stereotypical method of mourning, oppressed by her husband and their marriage, and oppressed by her own heart, which dares not continue on after losing her independence once more. Oppression in America was not uncommon at this time, especially in marriages. Kate Chopin was a feminist and often tried to expose how confined women were in society and in marital relationships. Liu Zhuo said that â€Å"[This short story was] exploring how American main stream society ignored womens values and imposed constraints on spiritual freedom. (Zhuo, 2004). Individuality in this short story is seen strongly when Louise is contemplating her own life. She, a dependent and intelligent woman, feels as if she has shrugged off some horrid burden and is allowed to have a free and wonderful time after she learns of the accident. As impressive as this may sound, she was intended on being just another woman being oppressed in this time period, but the death of her husband liberates her enough to show her independent nature. Her strong will and desire to be her own person is evident in this analysis. Louise desires nothing more than to be her own person, but she may have not been aware if that before the news arrived. When her unknown desire comes into light, she becomes a shining new woman that is apart from other confined women. Symbolism in â€Å"The Story of an Hour† is both subtle and strong. Symbolism of oppression is often here seen in her desire to be free. This desire is projected to an open window and this window becomes a symbol for her newly-found freedom and prospects after finding out that her husband has died. Peering out of this window, Louise sees life and earthly wonders she had never before hoped to enjoy, and she begins to wonder about how her life will be now that she is free from the marriage. The text even goes so far in stating that â€Å"She was drinking in a very elixir of life through that open window. † (Chopin, 1894). This symbol becomes complete when she turns away from the window to find her husband lives, at which point she loses her life. Another symbolic aspect in this short story is her heart itself. In the story, her heart issues are the main focus of disaster and her joy. At the beginning of the story, her heart trouble is the first thing that is mentioned about her. When she begins thinking about her newly-acquired freedom, her heart races. The text relates that â€Å"Her pulses beat fast, and the coursing blood warmed and relaxed every inch of her body. † (Chopin, pgh 11). This would imply that her heart had been stoic and languid before this time, meaning that she was only now truly beginning to live. The news of her husbands death may have been broken to her gently so that her heart might not cause her death, but her heart actually stops beating when she finds out that he lives, alluding that she has symbolically and physically died again under her marriages oppression. Asserting that the heart troubles are symbolic, it would be easy to compare metaphorically her physical heart trouble to the trouble of her love life. It is common knowledge that when one loses another their heart might break, or that when one is in love their heart swells. Hearts are symbols for love, and Louises heart clearly lacks strength here. Louise has no reason to hate her husband, or be glad that he is dead. Rather, she expressed that she would be mournful at his funeral, and stated clearly that she did not love her husband. The characters of this story are very interesting, but Louise Mallard is the only one that has any true depth given to her. She is portrayed as a woman that has been confined to the cage of marriage, and would do anything to get out. She showed immense emotion to the onlookers after hearing the news of her husbands death but her inner thoughts and desires were joyful and hopeful. She has heart problems, but they are presented very vaguely and without a true label of disease. This, along with her external mannerisms suggest that her heart problems are physical and emotional. The point of view is written in third-person omniscient and is essential for the story to be carried out correctly. As a matter of fact, the entirety of the story would be very different if it had been written in the first-person point of view. The very first sentence would not have been possible, and thus the knowledge of her heart malady would not have been revealed. Perhaps if it had been written from her eyes, the entire story also might have sounded rather malicious. The narrator also serves to make Louise a sympathetic character rather than an uncaring one. Making excuses and sugar-coating her feelings of freedom, the narrator is essential in this story. Louise was not seeking out freedom from oppression or her marriage, but she had a taste of freedom through her open window when she learned she was a widow. Rather than her heart breaking as her family feared, her heart started beating. Louise gained her individuality and became a very dynamic character in the hour shut up in her room. Through the sympathetic narrator, the reader goes on a journey of self-discovery with Louise as she claws her way to a free state of mind and being. It is with these literary elements that the story teaches the theme of an individual dealing with an oppressive marriage. Resources http://en.cnki.com.cn/Article_en/CJFDTOTAL-DBDS200406020.htm

Setting Up and Validating Radio Buttons

Setting Up and Validating Radio Buttons The setup and validation of radio buttons appears to be the form field that gives many webmasters the most difficulty in setting up. In actual fact the setup of these fields is the most simple of all form fields to validate as radio buttons set one value that only needs to be tested when the form is submitted. The difficulty with radio buttons is that there are at least two and usually more fields that need to be placed on the form,  related together and tested as one group. Provided that you use the correct naming conventions and layout for your buttons, you will not have any trouble. Setup the Radio Button Group The first thing that to look at when using radio buttons on our form is how the buttons need to be coded in order for them to function properly as radio buttons. The desired behavior we want is to have only one button selected at a time; when one button is selected then any previously selected button will be automatically deselected. The solution here is to give all of the radio buttons within the group the same name but different values. Here is the code used for the  radio button themselves. input typeradio namegroup1 idr1 value1 /input typeradio namegroup1 idr2 value2 /input typeradio namegroup1 idr3 value3 / The creation of multiple groups of radio buttons for the one form is also straightforward. All you need to do is to provide the second group of radio buttons with a different name to that used for the first group. The name field determines which group that a particular button belongs to. The value that will be passed for a specific group when the form is submitted will be the value of the button within the group that is selected at the time that the form is submitted. Describe Each Button In order for the person filling out the form to understand  what each radio button in our group does, we need to provide descriptions for each button. The simplest way to do this is to provide a description as text immediately following the button. There are a couple of problems  with just using plain text, however: The text may be visually associated with the radio button, but it may not be clear to some who use screen readers, for example.  In most user interfaces using radio buttons, the text associated with the button is clickable and able to select its associated radio button. In our case here, the text will not work in this way unless the text is specifically associated with the button. Associating Text with a Radio Button To associate  the text with its corresponding radio button so that clicking on the text will select that button, we need to make a further addition to the code for each button by surrounding the entire button and its associated text within a label. Here is what the complete HTML for one of the buttons would look like: input typeradio namegroup1 idr1 value1 /label forr1 button one/label As the radio button with the id name referred to in the for parameter of the label tag is actually contained within the tag itself, the for and id parameters are redundant in some browsers. Their  browsers, however, are often not smart enough to recognize the nesting, so it is worth putting them in to maximize the number of browsers in which the  code will function. That completes the coding of the radio buttons themselves. The final step is to set up the radio button validation using JavaScript. Setup Radio Button Validation Validation of groups of radio buttons may not be obvious, but it is straightforward once you know how. The following function will validate that one of the radio buttons in a group has been selected: // Radio Button Validation// copyright Stephen Chapman, 15th Nov 2004,14th Sep 2005// you may copy this function but please keep the copyright notice with itfunction valButton(btn) {    var cnt -1;    for (var ibtn.length-1; i -1; i) {          if (btn[i].checked) {cnt i; i -1;}    }    if (cnt -1) return btn[cnt].value;    else return null;} To use the above function, call it from within your form validation routine and pass it the radio button group name.  It will return the value of the button within the group that is selected, or return a null value if no button in the group is selected. For example, here is  the code that will perform the radio button validation: var btn valButton(form.group1);if (btn null) alert(No radio button selected);else alert(Button value btn selected); This code was included into the function called by an onClick event attached to the validate (or submit) button on the form. A reference to the whole form was passed as a parameter into the function, which uses the form argument to refer to the complete form. To validate the radio button group with the name group1 we, therefore, pass form.group1 to the valButton function. All of the radio button groups that you will ever need can be handled using the steps covered above.
